It’s building — faster, bigger, and with more
intent than any nation we’ve ever seen.
China now produces 350,000
mechanical engineers every year.
The U.S.?
Around 45,000.
That gap is widening —
and it’s the reason China
isn’t catching up anymore.
It’s pulling away.
In the last 20 years, China became
the world’s factory,
then the engineer,
then the creditor.
Now it’s the military shipbuilder,
the AI patent leader,
the rare-earth gatekeeper,
and the largest trading partner
to more than 120 countries.
This is not a “rising” power. It rose.
And now, it’s rewiring the world.
Manufacturing?
30% of global output.
Trade surplus?
Over $1 trillion last year.
Navy size?
Largest in the world
by ship count — and growing fast.
Tech?
Dominant in patents
for AI, 5G, solar, EVs.
Population?
Shrinking, fast —
but the workforce is still massive,
and with (& w/o) the help of AI,
when it comes to manufacturing,
STILL, no one is better.
**insert: Apple CEO Tim Cook recently explaining that "China stopped being the cheapest YEARS AGO- they're simply the best"
Meanwhile, the U.S.–China relationship
has moved from codependent to confrontational.
Tariffs, sanctions, blacklists,
chip bans, counter-bans,
espionage claims, naval standoffs,
cyber-attacks —
we are no longer in a trade war.
We are in a systemic divorce.
The old peace — trade ties
in exchange for predictability —
is gone.
And this isn’t the Cold War 2.0.
It’s something more complicated
and more dangerous:
Two superpowers locked together financially,
but preparing for a future where they might not be.
Taiwan is the flashpoint.
India, Russia, and Saudi
Arabia are the swing states.
And the rest of the world is hedging —
quietly aligning with whoever looks most durable.
The U.S. and China now make up
~40% of global GDP and
~80% of global power projection.
Everyone else is either reacting… or realigning.
bottom line
This isn’t about who’s “winning.”
It’s about the fact that the entire
global system is being reprogrammed —
and the two biggest nodes are barely speaking.
